We have added links to the Cuba Electronic White and Yellow pages, which are now available on line from Cuba. They appear to be quite limited in content to institutions and individuals "officially recognized" by the government (in other words, they are not real phone directories). You can reach these links through our Links page under the category "Spanish Search Engines".

 

dingSpanish Genealogy Computer Program
We have recently been informed of a Genealogy Computer Program which works in Spanish, Catalan and English. The General Family Documentation System - GDS, developed in Spain, has recently been updated to Version 3. A trial version is available for download. dingMyFamily.com Acquires RootsWeb (25 Jun 2000)
MyFamily.com,Inc., the largest Internet commercial genealogy enterprise, has acquired RootsWeb, the largest non-profit genealogy community. MyFamily.com, Inc. includes such well known commercial enterprises as Ancestry.com, FamilyHistory.com and MyFamily.com. RootsWeb is host of numerous free genealogy mailing lists, bulletin boards, web sites, data bases and search engines, including our CUBA-L mailing list, the Cuban Surname Bulletin Board and nearly all WorldGenWeb sites (but not the CubaGenWeb site which is independently hosted).

MyFamily.com, Inc. has promised to retain free access to users to all of the RootsWeb resources. Their press release, however, indicates that the RootsWeb acquisition will provide MyFamily.com with "an increase in advertising real estate" and "will provide increased transaction and commerce opportunities". Stay tuned for further developments....

 

dingSugar Mills List (14 Mar 2000)
A cross reference list showing the original and current names for all active sugar mills in Cuba has been posted. The listing also includes the "official" mill number designations.

 

dingAddresses Lists Completed (20 Feb 2000)
We have completed our lists of addresses and telephone numbers in Cuba of interest to Cuban genealogy. These lists include all archives, churches, cemeteries, civil registers, religious offices, religious communities and fraternal lodges.

 

dingCuban Genealogical Society's REVISTA Resumes Publication (29 Jan 2000)
After a pause of over 4 years (the last issue was on October 1995), the Cuban Genealogical Society's REVISTA has resumed publication. Congratulations to Mayra Sanchez-Johnson, the REVISTA's publisher and President of the CGS, and welcome back! Thanks also to all the volunteers who contributed articles and translations. The contents of the January 2000 issue are:

  • Editor's Letter
  • Ignacio Agramonte
  • The Garcia-Pulido Lineage
  • Tobacco, Tampa and Marti City
  • Parish Register of Cienfuegos, Las Villas
