News Archive - 2011

This page holds significant news items that were on the CubaGenWeb Home Page during the year 2011. For previous years consult the index on the left.

20 March 2011 - We have added several links to lists of the victims of the S.S. Morro Castle disaster that took place on 8 Sep 1934. The main link provides some personal details of the victims. You can reach these links by clicking on the above headline.

MARGARITA HANNEN, R.I.P.

29 March 2011 - Our belated condolences to the family and friends of Margarita Hannen, who passed away on 10 January 2011, after a long struggle with cancer.

We met Margarita for the first time many years ago, on the Compuserve Hispanic Genealogy Forum, long before the Internet became popular and before the birth of CubaGenWeb. We finally met in person when I was transfered to the San Francisco bay area in 1996 and had dinner at her home in Mill Valley.

Margarita was always willing to help others and contributed the visitor hints to the Masnata Collection at the Otto Richter Library of the University of Miami that are posted on this web site. Margarita moved to Texas in 2005 to be near her daughter, but eventually returned to Mill Valley.

A few years ago we were able to meet her when she visited Miami to say goodbye to her friends and relatives in the area.

China, you will be missed!

18 April 2011 - The 1949 Cuba Telephone Directory has been digitized by the University of Florida Digital Collections and is available though the above headline. Many thanks to M. Martin for the information on this valuable resource.

NEW SEARCH ENGINES

29 July 2011 - The folowing new genealogical data search engines have been brought to our attention. They are primarily for U.S. and European data, not Cuban, but they might still be useful in tracing relatives that immigrated to, or traveled through, the U.S.A.

Thanks to the Cuban Genealogical Club of Miami, FL for the first link. Thanks to Mariano Selus for the fourth link.

8 October 2011 - Our links page has been translated, with our authorization, to the Estonian language. Click on the above headline to visit the translated page. We really did not think there were many Estonian speaking individuals interested in Cuban genealogy, so we were quite surprised at the request.

26 October 2011 - In case you are interested, there will be a lecture on his book "Learning to Die in Miami" given by renown Cuban author Carlos Eire at the Graham Student Center of the FIU Modesto Maidique Miami Campus on November 21, 2011 from 1PM-2PM. Click on the above headline for more details.

29 October 2011 - We have just added several pages of interesting and humorous advertisements that we ran across while transcribing passenger lists from the 1800's from the Diario de la Marina newspaper. Click on the above headline to go to the introductory page.

14 November 2011 - We have been in touch with Mayra Sanchez-Johnson, who, for many years, ran the Cuban Genealogical Society (CGS) in Salt Lake City and published their Revista. She explained that the CGS had closed and that all its papers were donated to the Cuban Collection at the University of Miami. She is no longer selling back issues of the Revista because they are too expensive to reprint. Mayra very kindly gave us permission to scan the 57 published issues of the Revista and post them on CubaGenWeb. We have completed this work. Clicking on the above headline will take you to the page where you can downlad the Cumulative Index and the digitized issues.
