MIAMI
GENEALOGY CONFERENCE A GREAT SUCCESS
REUNION 2002, a genealogy conference in
the city of Miami, organized by the Cuban
Genealogy Club of Miami was a great success. Among the distingushed
speakers we had the pleasure of listening to the noted genealogist Dr.
Enrique Hurtado de Mendoza; the President of the Cuban Genealogical Society,
Mayra Sanchez-Johnson; an author of several books on the Jews of Cuba,
Betty Heisler-Samuels; the Director of the Cuban Heritage Collection at
the Otto Richter Library of the University of MIami, Esperanza de Varona;
the notable cuban historian and novelist Manuel Marquez-Sterling; an expert
in publishing your family history, Richard Hooverson; and a spanish genealogist,
Jose Antonio de la Torre. We also had the pleasure of participating by
giving a talk on the use of computers and the Internet for genealogy.
ELLIS ISLAND RECORDS ON-LINE
Thanks to the work of numerous volunteers from
the Church of Latter Day Saints, the Ellis Island immigration records
have been scanned and transcribed to a searchable data base. You can reach
these records at www.ellisisland.org.
The records encompass all 22 million passengers (tourists, inmigrants,
returning US Citizens, passengers in transit to other destinations and
crew members) arriving at the Port of New York in the years 1892-1924.
You can research passenger records for ships that brought the immigrants
- even see the original manifest with passenger names, destination, etc.
