Nov 2006 - We are very proud to have recently received a Genealogy Outstanding Achievement Award from the Florida State Genealogical Society for our CubaGenWeb web site. We thank the FSGS for the Award and also thank the Miami Cuban Genealogy Club Board of Directors and, in particular Martha Ibanez Zervoudakis, for having nominated us for this prestigious award. We also thank Martha and Annette Piedra Baquedano for being present representing the Club when we received the award.

 

Oct 2006 - These conferences are free and will take place Saturday Oct 21 in the West Dade Regional Library in Miami and Saturday Oct 28 in the Pembroke Pines Branch Library in Pembroke Pines, FL. The conferences are co-sponsored by the Public Librtaries of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties as part of their programs for Hispanic Month. Also the School Boards of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties support these events through the Social Studies Departments of West Miami Middle School, Miami Coral Park High School, Rockway Middle School, Walter C. Young Middle School and Charles W. Flanagan High School, the last two in Pembroke Pines. For more details click on the above headline.

 

Sep 2006 - We have augmented the database of prisoners and deportees during Cuba's Ten Years War ("Guerra Grande") 1868-1878 . The database now includes 610 individuals sent to various spanish prisons during the first two years of the war. To reach this database click on the above headline.

 

Sep 2006 - The University of Miami will host its second Cuban Genealogy Seminar, Saturday September 16th at 9 am at Casa Bacardi, located at 1531 Brescia Avenue (SW 57 Ave & 64 Street). Space is limited so please call for reservations at 305-284-2822, the event is free of charge. For those who have already attended the Introductory Seminar you are invited to attend a workshop to be held the same day beginning at 11 am. Jul 2006 - We have just added another 1026 people to our passenger data base. These individuals were agricultural laborers and their families who emigrated to Cuba at the end of 1889 and beginning of 1890 under a Royal Decree which provided them with free passage and land to work under a program to increase the white colonization of the Island. The individuals came from the following Provinces of Spain: Granada, Malaga, Santander, Cadiz, Canaries, Coruña, and Madrid. The sources for this data were identified and brought to our attention by Lydia Reyes.

SAD NEWS

Jun 2006 - It is with great sadness that we report the death of our friend Jose de Santa Cruz Pacheco Rivery which occurred on May 13. "Don Pepe" contributed several important data bases to CubaGenWeb, including the database of officers of the Ten Years War, the list of Cuban founding families and the corrected and expanded list of Santiago de Cuba Marriages. We will truly miss him.

 

Jun 2006 - Thanks to the kindness of Humberto Estrada del Sol, we have been able to start a new data base of prisoners and deportees during the Ten Years War (1868-1878). At present this database contains the names of 244 individuals who were the first Cuban prisoners deported to the island of Fernando Poo off the coast of Africa. Jun 2006 - Under the sponsorship of the University of Miami's Cuban Family History and Genealogy Project, a free Cuban genealogical workshop will take place on Saturday 17 Jun 2006 at the Casa Bacardi in Coral Gables, led by members of the Project and members of the Cuban Genealogy Club of Miami. GENEALOGY EXHIBIT AT CUBA NOSTALGIA

May 2006 - The University of Miami's exhibit at the Cuba Nostalgia fair will highlight the work of the Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies’ Cuba Family and Genealogy Project which helps Cuban American families in our community trace their backgrounds and preserve their family histories. Jorge Piñón, the research associate who heads the project, will be available along with members of the Cuban Genealogical Club of Miami. They will help visitors start the research of their family roots using computers. The Cuba Nostalgia fair will be held from Friday-Sunday May 19-21 at the Fair and Expo Center, at 112th Avenue and Coral Way.

 

Feb 2006 - BADATOR is a new searchable on-line database of the diocesan (church) archives of the Basque regions of Spain (Araba/ Alava, Gipuzkoa/ Guipuzcoa & Bizkaia/ Vizcaya) - the transcription work is currently in process and will be completed in 2008. As of Mar 2003, 590,000 records had been entered into the database.

 

Mar 2006 - Thanks to the Canary Island correspondent "Chemjov" we have included a list of Spanish soldiers repatriated to the Canaries at the conclusion of the Cuban War of Independence. The author asks that if any reader has any knowledge of any of the listed individuals that they contact him for a historical study that he is doing.

 

Apr 2006 - A cuban historian answers our questions on the existence of additional lists of veterans of Cuba's wars of independence at the Cuban National Archive.

 

Apr 2006 - We have added an album of photos of Mambi soldiers obtained from the Library of Congress Collections or contributed by our readers. You are welcome to share any photos of veteran ancestors you may have in your possession.

 

Apr-May 2006 - We have added to our database another 1796 names of passengers who arrived in Habana in 1848-1891 This brings our passenger data base to 4334 names.

Feb 2006 - We have added to our passengers database the names of 728 individuals who requested a license to travel from Spain to the Island of Cuba in the years 1801-1835.
