dingCUBA TIGHTENS ITS CONTROL OVER INTERNET
The Cuban government tightened its controls over the Internet on Friday, 9 January 2004, prohibitiing access over the ordinary telephone service most citizens have at home. This move will surely affect hundreds, perhaps thousands of Cubans who access the Internet from their homes, using computers and Internet accounts they have "borrowed" or purchased on the black market. The restriction will also affect the several hundred cubans who access CubaGenWeb and CUBA-L every month. We at CubaGenWeb are completely opposed to any form of censorship of the Internet and deplore this latest move by Cuba's despotic regime. For the complete story click here.

dingNEW SPAIN IMMIGRANT ANCESTORS PROJECT
A new Immigrant Ancestors Project, sponsored by Brigham Young University’s Center for Family History and Genealogy, uses emigration records to locate the birthplaces of immigrants which are missing on many port records and naturalization documents in arrival countries. The records available for people leaving Spain after 1790 include passport registers and application files, passenger contracts and many other records rich in genealogical information. With help from archivists in the port cities as well as in other archives of Spain, the Project is creating images of these documents and using volunteers to help extract these into a computerized database that will be a useful tool to both genealogists and historians. For more details, to volunteer as a trancriber, or to search what has already been transcribed click here.

dingLEDON AND LOPEZ-SILVERO FAMILY GENEALOGIES
Jul 2004 - We have just finished adding 662 names of the LEDON family and 172 names of the LOPEZ-SILVERO family to our family tree. Both families are well known families from Santa Clara which connect to many other surnames in Cuba. You can browse the combined tree and look for any surnames of interest by going to the WorldConnect Project web site and typing "ed_elizondo" (without the quotes) for the name of the database. The LOPEZ-SILVERO data has also been extracted into a separate database which you can reach by typing "lopez-silvero " as the name of the database. The LEDON data was extracted from a LEDON-NORIEGA genealogy booklet, privately published in 1946, which was brought from Cuba and has recently come into my posession. Unfortunately this booklet has no dates, only names and relationships. Most of the new LOPEZ-SILVERO data has been extracted from the LOPEZ-SILVERO chapter in the Jaruco work and merged with information previously gathered from other sources. The published information, of course, excludes information on living individuals.

dingTHE VIRGINIUS INCIDENT
Nov 2004 - The names of the crew and expeditionary force on board the steamship Virginius have now been posted. In 1873, during the Ten Years War, the Virginius was captured by a Spanish warship and sixteen cuban patriots, the captain of the ship and 36 members of the crew (mostly US citizens and and British subjects) were executed almost immediately in Santiago de Cuba by order of the Spanish Commanding General. These executions would have continued except for the timely intervention of a British warship. A brief summary of this little known incident is included. To reach this information, use the link titled "Virginius", under "Military Records" in the "Data Bank" section of the menu on the left side of our home page.
